Muslim religious leaders and members of the public gathered on Wednesday evening for a programme of prayer and reflection following the sinking of the MV Barima, offering support to those affected and calling for national unity.
The event, organised by the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) of Guyana, was held at the MYO Complex on Woolford Avenue.
The programme featured presentations by Shaikh Moinul Hack of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, Shaikh Mumtaz Ali of the Guyana Islamic Trust and Moulana Riyad of the Sabeelur Rashaad Training Centre, alongside Quranic recitations. A moment of silence was observed for those who died and those still unaccounted for.
Guyana Islamic Trust representative Shaikh Mumtaz Ali described the sinking as a national tragedy and praised search and rescue teams, healthcare workers, volunteers, fishermen and boat operators for their efforts.
MYO executive member Imran Kabir said the tragedy had united Guyanese across religious and ethnic lines and called for renewed commitment to compassion and preserving human life.
Moulana Riyad said grief was a natural response but faith offered strength to endure it, urging Guyanese to continue supporting affected families through practical acts such as visits, transportation and long-term assistance.
The programme closed with a collective dua seeking mercy for those who died, comfort for grieving families and healing for survivors.
