Behind the grief surrounding the loss of 46-year-old Devon Mars was the story of a father driven by one purpose, providing a better life for his three children.
Mars, who died in the MV Barima tragedy, was laid to rest on Sunday as relatives and friends gathered to remember a hardworking businessman, a devoted father, and a man who made countless sacrifices for his family.
During the funeral service, his sister Daicia Mars described him as a father who placed his children at the centre of his life. She said Devon worked tirelessly to ensure they were cared for and had the opportunity to achieve their goals.
“Devon would do anything and everything to make sure his children are taken care of,” she said as she struggled to contain her tears.
Mars operated a business supplying meat to communities in the North West District. Relatives recalled that before his final journey aboard the MV Barima, he was advised to allow his shipment to travel without him and make the trip at a later time.
However, wanting to personally oversee the delivery, Mars chose to accompany the cargo, which reportedly included approximately 4,000 pounds of chicken, 4,000 pounds of pork and other meat products.
Those close to him said the decision reflected the responsibility and dedication that defined him as both a businessman and a father.
Among those attending the service was Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, who delivered condolences on behalf of President Dr Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips and the Government of Guyana.
Singh highlighted the aspirations of Mars’s children, noting that his eldest daughter had recently completed her CXC examinations and hopes to become a petroleum engineer. His second daughter had recently written the National Grade Six Assessment and was preparing to enter secondary school, while his son continues his education.
The Finance Minister acknowledged the deep pain of the family’s loss, particularly for Mars’s parents, and encouraged relatives to continue supporting his children as they pursue the future their father had envisioned for them.
He said the MV Barima tragedy had deeply affected people across Guyana and assured the family that the Government would continue to assist Mars’s children.
“All of Guyana grieves with you, our hearts bleed with you, we shed tears alongside you. I can’t imagine the pain that you will feel tomorrow, waking up without Devon being here, and the day after. I can’t promise you that it will be easier,” Singh said.
Relatives and friends recalled that Mars took great pride in his children’s achievements and eagerly looked forward to celebrating their successes.
As his casket was slowly wheeled from the yard for the final journey, grief overwhelmed those gathered. Tears flowed freely, embraces were shared, and loved ones struggled to say goodbye to a man remembered for his love, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to his family.
