After a life marked by dedication and sacrifice, 54-year-old Orin Anthony Clarke was given a respectful final farewell.
Clarke, a crew member aboard the ill-fated MV Barima, was laid to rest following a funeral service on Friday at Persaud Funeral Home in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Clarke was among those who lost their lives in the tragic sinking of the MV Barima on 18 July 2026. Family members, friends, colleagues and loved ones gathered to pay their final respects to a man remembered for his dedication, kindness and commitment to those around him.
Clarke served for 14 years with the Transport and Harbours Department, where he worked in the Marine Section and rose to the position of Acting Boatswain.
Representing the Transport and Harbours Department, Carolyn Waithe, Assistant to the Marine Superintendent, extended condolences to Clarke’s family and highlighted his years of service.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Mr Clarke during this time of loss,” Waithe said.
She explained that Clarke began his employment with the department as a watchman in 2013 before being transferred to the Marine Section on November 8, 2013. He was later placed on the monthly establishment in 2016 and promoted in 2024 to the position of Acting Boatswain.
Throughout his tenure, Clarke earned the respect of colleagues and supervisors through his strong work ethic, discipline and professionalism.
“He was known for his ability to quickly adapt to life in the Marine Section. He carried out his duties with great attentiveness, particularly in ensuring the proper readiness and maintenance of vessels,” Waithe said.
She added that Clarke approached every task with dedication and diligence and would be deeply missed by his relatives, friends and colleagues.
Clarke, who was one of nine siblings and the father of 23 children, was remembered by his family as a loving and caring person who always looked out for those around him.
His son, Eon Clarke, recalled their final conversation before the tragedy.
“I was at Lusignan Prison, so he told me, ‘Son, I will come and visit you when I come back. Just take care of yourself,'” he said.
Describing his father, Eon said Clarke was “a loving person” and someone who never turned his back on his children, despite the challenges they faced.
“It’s real hard. It’s real heartrending,” he said, becoming emotional as he struggled to continue.
Clarke’s stepdaughter, Yolanda Marissa Williams, also paid tribute to the impact he had on her life.
“The trust that he would have bestowed on me, I think probably shaped my personality of being his dominant and independent young lady that I am today,” she said.
Before his passing, Clarke had spent 14 years sharing his life with his partner, Yulanda “Zandy” Adams, who previously spoke of the simple acts of love that defined their relationship.
Adams recalled how Clarke would often return from trips with supplies for her small business, including casareep, cassava bread and other produce.
She said their last conversation was about items he promised to bring home after returning from sea.
She described him as a dedicated worker who was looking forward to retirement after years of service.
Clarke’s passing has left a void among his family, friends and colleagues, who continue to mourn the loss of a man remembered for his service, compassion and devotion to those he loved.
