Cheques are now available for citizens without bank accounts under the third phase of the National $100,000 Cash Grant distribution process, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance Dr Ashni Singh said.
Dr Singh explained that the third phase targets eligible persons who do not have bank accounts and prefer to receive their cash grant by cheque, following two earlier phases that covered direct bank deposits and special outreaches to hinterland communities, shut-ins and senior citizen homes.
He said the cash grant portal, cashgrant.gov.gy, now allows persons to self-register and select cheque payment as their preferred delivery option. Once registered, applicants complete identity verification, including scanning their ID card and a liveness check, before requesting cheque payment.
“It verifies that you are a real person and alive and it then gives you an option to request cheque payment,” Dr Singh said.
Cheques will be printed and distributed to locations countrywide, with applicants notified by two means: through the portal, which will show whether an application is being processed or where and when a cheque is ready for collection, and by phone call to the number provided at registration.
Despite the launch of cheque payments, the Government continues to encourage citizens to open bank accounts for safer, faster and more convenient access to financial services, Dr Singh said, adding that teams will still be available to assist with bank account registration when persons collect their cheques.
To date, 470,420 persons have been processed for the $100,000 cash grant through self-registration and cheque processing combined, placing over $47 billion in disposable income into the hands of Guyanese citizens countrywide, Dr Singh said.
