US businesses not in Guyana to extract and leave, says US ambassador

US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot

US companies operating in Guyana are committed to supporting the country’s economy and are not merely here to extract resources and leave, United States Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot said.

Theriot made the statement during the US’s 250th Independence celebration at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel on last Thursday, highlighting partnerships created with local businesses and continued investment in capacity building.

“US companies are not here to extract and leave like some other countries,” she said. “They are here for the long haul — training Guyanese workers and investing in a Guyana that will be even stronger a generation from now than it is today,”

Highlighting investments in energy, health, technology and other sectors, Theriot said significant benefits are reaching both Guyana and the US as the two countries work together to create more opportunities for their citizens.

“We are united by our shared interest in building a better future for our people,” she said, adding that the goal is a future that makes both nations safer, stronger and more prosperous.

“And from all accounts, that is exactly what we are doing together,” she said.
Theriot’s remarks follow an earlier statement from President Dr Irfaan Ali, who said Guyana will no longer be treated as a mere consumer market for foreign goods.

He said international corporations and regional manufacturers seeking access to Guyanese consumers must invest in onshore production, manufacturing and value creation within the country.
