Padminie Megnauth, 36, could barely hold back tears as she called for justice over the death of her only son — 16-year-old Aftaz King, who died in a motorcycle crash on the Princeton Access Road, Corentyne, Berbice, on Thursday.
“Me son done dead and gone… me can’t get back me son,” she said.
Megnauth told Ignite News she was informed that police officers struck her son’s motorcycle from behind and fled the scene before returning with another vehicle.
“They pick you up and throw you in the vehicle like some dead dog or some dead animal, like you don’t get life no more,” she claimed.
She arrived at the hospital to find her son’s lifeless body, with a broken foot, broken neck and head injuries.
“No money can’t bring he back. We want justice for my son,” she said.
King, who did not possess a driver’s licence, died at about 6:45 p.m. after allegedly attempting to evade a police patrol while riding motorcycle CL 5607.
He lost control and crashed into a utility pole, preliminary investigations showed. His mother said she believed he may have fled out of fear of having the motorcycle seized.
His father, Rakesh Sahadew, 38, said the family had been left devastated by the loss.
“You mind them from small, you give them everything, and just like that, one scene and everybody left stunned. All we need now is justice,” the young father said.
The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility has launched an investigation.
