
A 61-year-old man died on Wednesday after being struck by a motor lorry on the Craig Public Road, East Bank Demerara, police said.
Lal Singh, of New Hope, East Bank Demerara, was riding an unregistered electric cycle when the accident occurred around 17:10 hrs, involving motor lorry GAP 5043.
According to police, the lorry was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane in a line of slow-moving traffic. The driver, a 29-year-old man of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, and Kwatta, Suriname, reported feeling the lorry go over a hump before hearing someone shout for him to stop.
He stopped and reversed a short distance, after which Singh was found lying under the left side of the lorry, near the front wheel, with injuries about his body. The electric cycle was nearby, police said.
Emergency Medical Technicians took Singh, who was semi-conscious, to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor on duty and later died while receiving treatment.
His body was taken to Sandy’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Two breathalyzer tests conducted on the driver found no trace of alcohol, police said.
The driver is in police custody assisting with investigations, which are ongoing.
