Maintenance and contractor disruptions behind blackouts, not generation shortfalls, says Minister Indar

Public Utilities and Aviation Minister Deodat Indar

Public Utilities and Aviation Minister Deodat Indar on Thursday said power outages are not occurring due to a lack of electricity generation, amid public discussion surrounding ongoing negotiations to renew the Karpowership contract.

Indar said any outages affecting consumers are linked to maintenance work on the national grid and disruptions caused by private contractors, not shortages in generation capacity.

“There may be power outages due to maintenance of the power grid and interruptions caused by private contractors,” he said in a statement.

The minister said the government is continuing negotiations between Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), UCC JV and Karpowership to secure what he described as the best possible commercial rate for the contract renewal.

He added that the powership continues to provide an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the national grid while negotiations remain ongoing.

Indar said the public will be informed once the contractual negotiations are completed.
