Guyana Defence Force Track Club and Running Brave Athletics Club surged to victory on Saturday as scores of spectators lined the streets of Georgetown for the Diamond Jubilee Road Relay.
The relay, organized by the Athletic Association of Guyana in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, brought together some of the country’s leading athletes, clubs and emerging talents in a mixed distance medley competition through the heart of the capital.
Guyana Defence Force Track Club won the 16-and-over mixed relay in 30 minutes 51.80 seconds, ahead of Police Progressive Youth Club in 31:09.10 and Running Brave Athletics Club in 35:15.90. Team Nice Athletics finished fourth in 37:33.10, Thunderbolt Track Club placed fifth in 38:22.11, and Lawn Tennis Federation completed the field in 45:25.76.
Running Brave Athletics Club also captured the under-16 title in 37:51.00, finishing ahead of Team Nice Athletics in 38:51.20 and Buxton Youth Developers in 39:12.30.
Police Progressive Youth Club placed fourth in 42:25.50, while Lawn Tennis Federation rounded out the top five in 45:32.42.
The race began and ended outside the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport on Main Street and took runners through several major roads, including Church Street, High Street, Young Street, Camp Street, New Garden Street, Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic, before returning to the finish line on Main Street.
Teams were required to field six athletes — four males and two females — adding a tactical dimension to the competition as clubs balanced speed, endurance and race strategy.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson, Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, and Vice President of the Guyana Olympic Association Cristy Campbell were among officials attending the event and cheering on competitors.
Addressing the gathering, Ramson said the road relay reflected the values of unity, excellence and national pride that have shaped Guyana’s development over the past six decades.
At the conclusion of the competition, Ramson, Ninvalle and Campbell presented prizes to the top-performing teams.
The event formed part of Guyana’s wider Diamond Jubilee celebrations and highlighted the country’s growing sporting talent and community spirit.
