A programme to support housing construction will be launched later this year as the government moves to assist residents with building their homes, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo has announced.
Jagdeo made the announcement on Friday during a public outreach at the University of Guyana, Berbice Campus, where he and members of Cabinet engaged directly with residents of Region Six on issues including housing and infrastructure.
During the event, the Vice President also assured residents that the government is working to clear the housing application backlog in the region.
“7,000 applications so far in for this region, and by mid-next year at the latest, they’ll clear all of it,” Jagdeo said, adding: “I want people to leave with a clear idea of when they’re getting their house lot.”
He said the forthcoming initiative will provide support for housing construction, though further details will be announced later in the year.
“Later, we’re going to launch a programme to support housing construction and maybe some assistance to people on construction, but that will come a little bit later in the year,” he noted.
Jagdeo urged residents to first focus on securing their house lots as the administration works through pending applications.
Meanwhile, Minister of Housing Collin Croal highlighted ongoing housing developments at Palmyra, noting that the government has already completed a number of homes in the area.
“We completed 100 of the three-bedroom houses and we’re about to start the next batch. Then we have another 100 young professional homes being built,” Croal said.
The outreach formed part of the government’s continued engagement with communities to address concerns and outline development plans.
