Creating sustainable employment opportunities for Amerindian communities remains a top government priority, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo told village leaders from across Region Two during an outreach at the Essequibo Technical Institute on Tuesday.

The engagement, which formed part of a wider government outreach, brought together representatives from several Amerindian communities to discuss employment, education, housing and village development.

Jagdeo said significant resources are being directed towards Amerindian communities, noting that approximately $1.4 billion has been allocated for projects in Region Two aimed at improving livelihoods and strengthening local economies.

He encouraged villages to become more involved in income-generating projects, while stressing that education and skills training remain essential to expanding long-term opportunities for young people.

The Vice President also urged residents to make greater use of the Government’s free university education programme at the University of Guyana, saying increased participation would broaden access to higher learning across communities.

He further addressed concerns relating to housing and social support, noting that additional assistance and housing improvements are being rolled out along the Essequibo Coast.

While acknowledging that not all concerns can be resolved immediately, Jagdeo said the Government remains committed to sustained engagement with Amerindian communities and ensuring development programmes are aligned with residents’ needs.
