
The Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning has launched an investigation into allegations of poor treatment, occupational safety and health violations, and labour concerns involving foreign workers employed at Ekaa Hrim Earth Resources in Batavia Village, Region Seven.
According to a release, the ministry acting on information received, initiated inquiries into the matter, which involves 38 Indian nationals attached to the mining company. Labour and Manpower Planning Minister Keoma Griffith, later engaged acting High Commissioner of India to Guyana, Manoj Kumar, as part of initial diplomatic and administrative consultations.
A subsequent meeting was held between ministry officials, the affected workers, and management of Ekaa Hrim, during which the workers were given the opportunity to outline their complaints. Issues raised included allegations of poor working conditions and unfair treatment.
The ministry said concerns regarding the retention of passports were addressed following the minister’s intervention, with officials confirming that the documents have since been returned to the workers.
Ekaa Hrim has been given 24 hours to respond to the allegations as part of the ongoing inquiry. The ministry also said it is aware of reports concerning the death of a worker on May 12, 2026, which will be included in the investigation.
A joint team comprising officers from the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning, the Guyana Police Force, the Trafficking in Persons Unit under the Ministry of Home Affairs, and other relevant agencies has been deployed to continue investigations and assess conditions at the site.
The ministry said it remains actively engaged and will take all necessary steps to ensure compliance with Guyana’s labour laws, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
