Court orders removal of vendors around Georgetown Public Hospital before month-end

Vendors surrounding Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation

The High Court has ordered the removal of vendors, mobile trucks, carts and other encumbrances from streets surrounding the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), following legal action filed by the hospital against the Mayor and City Council through the Town Clerk of Georgetown.

The matter was heard before Justice Deborah Kumar-Chettry in the High Court of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Guyana.
According to the fixed date application dated May 13, 2026, GPHC, through its attorneys Sase Gunraj and Jayaram Sanasie, sought an order of mandamus compelling the Town Clerk of the City of Georgetown to remove vendors and structures obstructing areas around the hospital.

Representing the respondent were attorneys Everton Singh-Lammy and Angel Stephens.
The court ruled by consent that the Town Clerk, along with servants and agents acting under the Municipal and District Councils Act, must remove or cause the removal of food and beverage vendors, hucksters, mobile trucks, carts and other encumbrances located on pavements and street parapets surrounding the hospital.

The order specifically applies to Lamaha Street between Thomas Street and East Street, East Street between Lamaha Street and New Market Street, New Market Street between Thomas Street and East Street, and Middle Street between Thomas Street and East Street.

The court ordered that the removal exercise must include items such as vehicles, push carts, drays, barrels, boxes, dustbins, pallets and other objects left or stored on the streets and pavements around the hospital’s perimeter.

Justice Kumar-Chettry further ordered the Town Clerk to comply with the directive on or before May 31, 2026.
The court also noted that there would be no order as to costs.

The order warned that failure to comply with the judgment could result in contempt of court proceedings, which may lead to imprisonment or confiscation of assets.
