Basketball will take centre stage in Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations when the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) stages the Independence 3×3 Championship on May 17 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Organised in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the tournament will feature 10 teams competing for a top prize of $300,000.

The event forms part of Guyana’s activities commemorating 60 years of Independence, with the Ministry providing full sponsorship for the prize fund.

The runners-up will receive $200,000, while the third-place finishers will earn $100,000. The tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) will also collect a $25,000 prize.

Among the participating teams are Linden-based clubs Amelia’s Ward Jets, Retrieve Raiders, Victory Valley Royals and Block 22 Flames. Georgetown teams Ravens, Colts, Eagles and Pacesetters are also set to compete.

The field will also include a combined Berbice team and Guyana’s National Under-23 side.
The 10 teams will be divided into two pools, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals.

The winners of the semifinals will progress to the final, while third place will be determined based on FIBA 3×3 rankings.

The GBF said the tournament would also serve as preparation for Guyana’s participation at the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Commonwealth Games, marking the country’s first appearance in 3×3 basketball at both events.
