The story of endurance, identity and cultural survival took centre stage on Tuesday as residents gathered at Bush Lot for Indian Arrival Day commemorations, held under the auspices of the Regional Democratic Council of Region Two.

Set at the historic Bush Lot monument, the observance drew attention to the journey of East Indian indentured labourers who arrived in Guyana in May 1838. The first arrivals came from northern India, mainly Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, with smaller numbers from other regions. They were transported from the port of Calcutta aboard the ships Whitby and Hesperus, marking the beginning of a system that would last until 1917 and bring approximately 238,000 Indians to Guyana.

The site, long associated with early settlement patterns, was framed by organisers as both a place of remembrance and a symbol of continuity for descendants of those early arrivals.

Against this backdrop, the ceremony unfolded as a blend of reflection and cultural expression. Devotional bhajans, qaseedas, tassa drumming and traditional dances filled the space, transforming the monument into a living gallery of heritage and memory.

Feature speaker Rudra Jayanta Bhagawati of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre traced the long arc of the Indian diaspora in Guyana, highlighting the contributions of descendants of indentured labourers across sectors such as medicine, law and governance. He also pointed to the enduring cultural and historical ties between Guyana and India.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, said the arrival of Indian ancestors represented more than labour migration, stressing that they carried customs, traditions and a strong sense of identity that still shape Guyanese society.

Director General of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Sonia Latchman, encouraged reflection on the sacrifices of indentured labourers, describing their experience as one that transformed hardship into community strength and opportunity.
