Safer and more reliable transportation for schoolchildren in riverine communities has been strengthened with the provision of a boat and engine to Lilydale Primary School and Akawini Primary School by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Region Two.
The vessels were handed over by Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit on behalf of the Region Two Administration.
Oodit said the initiative forms part of ongoing investment in the education sector, with a focus on improving access for students in remote and riverine areas. He said the support was provided following requests from the schools.
Regional Education Officer Shondelle said the intervention is expected to improve access to education for pupils in hinterland and riverine communities by ensuring safer and more reliable transportation.
Teacher Sherry Abrams, speaking on behalf of Lilydale Primary School Headteacher Luiana Chase, said transportation challenges have long affected families in the area, particularly during adverse weather and tidal conditions, which have impacted school attendance.
Headteacher of Akawini Primary School, Tristian Joseph, welcomed the support, saying it is expected to improve punctuality and participation in school activities.
“We are very pleased. We made the request and it was granted,” Joseph said.
The initiative forms part of broader national efforts to strengthen access to education in hinterland and riverine communities, where transportation remains a key challenge affecting school attendance and continuity.
