Mobile phone subscriptions in Guyana have surpassed one million users, marking a significant milestone in the country’s telecommunications sector, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) said in its 2025 annual report.
PUC Chairman Dr. Nanda Gopaul said the growth was driven by increased competition in the sector, including the entry of new service providers, the introduction of mobile number portability, and the expansion of tailored service plans for customers.
Number portability, which allows users to switch telecommunications providers while retaining their existing phone numbers, has strengthened competition by offering greater flexibility and consumer choice, he said.
The report also highlighted the entry of Starlink (Guyana), which expanded internet service options, particularly in hinterland and riverine communities.
The PUC said mobile teledensity exceeded 120 per cent, reflecting widespread device ownership and the use of multiple SIM cards.
Fixed broadband subscriptions also rose, surpassing 130,000 users, underscoring ongoing digital transformation and the growing importance of telecommunications in economic and social life.
The report noted that the third tranche of termination rate reductions under the Telecommunications Interconnection and Access Regulations 2020 was implemented in February last year, supporting lower consumer prices and increased competition in the sector.
