Law school moves closer to construction stage

Attorney General Anil Nandlall

Construction of Guyana’s first law school is moving closer to the implementation stage as the government prepares to seek consultancy services to begin development, Attorney General Anil Nandlall said on Tuesday.

Speaking on his programme Issues in the News, the Attorney General said advertisements for the procurement of services, including architectural and engineering designs, will be published next week by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board.

“The construction phase will soon commence,” he told his audience. The tenders will cover detailed structural designs, architectural drawings, design specifications, bills of quantities, engineers’ estimates, bid documents and supervision services.

The law school is to be built at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus, where land has already been identified and cleared.

It will be overseen by the Council of Legal Education, the regional accrediting body responsible for law schools in the Caribbean, including institutions in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and The Bahamas.

The government says the facility is expected to reduce the need for Guyanese students to study abroad and help address shortages in legal education while expanding regional training capacity.
