Fifty-five (55) NDCs have now been equipped with garbage trucks under a national solid waste management programme, following the handover of nine compactor trucks to Neighbourhood Democratic Councils in Region Five on Friday.
The latest distribution brings coverage to 78.6 per cent of NDCs nationwide, as authorities move to strengthen service delivery and improve waste disposal systems across communities.
Delivering remarks on behalf of President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said, “A growing Guyana demands a better approach to waste disposal,” noting coordinated efforts at all levels of government to manage waste effectively.
Referencing Martin Carter, he added, “All are involved, all are consumed,” stressing shared responsibility for sanitation.
He continued: “Wherever we are, we all have a very important role to play,” underscoring system strengthening.
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand said, “We want to make sure we leave a better Guyana for our children than what we have become accustomed to,” and added, “Before June, every NDC will have at least one garbage truck — for the first time,” while also stating, “We have a duty to give our children what we did not have, to let them become accustomed to a new and different Guyana.”
She also noted ongoing work to explore recycling and waste-to-energy models beyond sites such as Haags Bosch.
The programme continues to expand nationwide, with trucks already distributed across multiple regions and municipalities as part of efforts to build cleaner communities.
