A 31-year-old motorcyclist died in a collision with a motor lorry on Sunday night along the Williamsburg Public Road, Corentyne Berbice, police said.
Dead is Haresh Gopilall of Lot 25 D Williamsburg Village. Riding pillion was 27-year-old Yedesh Singh of Fyrish Village, who survived but sustained injuries.
Police said the accident occurred at about 21:00 hrs and involved a motor lorry, GVV 5043, driven by a 27-year-old man of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, and the motorcycle, CR 1603, owned and operated by Gopilall.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the lorry was proceeding east along the northern driving lane, while the motorcycle was travelling in the opposite direction at a reportedly fast rate. As the motorcycle approached, the lorry driver allegedly made a sudden right turn into its path, resulting in a collision.
The impact threw both the motorcyclist and pillion rider onto the roadway, causing multiple injuries. They were transported by public-spirited citizens to the Port Mourant Public Hospital.
Gopilall was pronounced dead on arrival, while Singh was treated and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was diagnosed with fractures to his left jaw and clavicle. He remains in stable condition.
Both vehicles have been lodged at the Rose Hall Town Police Station for examination.
The lorry driver remains in police custody and was administered two breathalyzer tests, which returned readings of 31 and 32 micrograms, police said.
The incident comes days after another fatal lorry-related accident along the Corentyne, in which 53-year-old Mark Songster of Fyrish died on Friday evening after being run over along the Fyrish Public Road.
