Mother charged, remanded to prison over strangling of daughter

Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud

A 26-year-old woman from Fyrish Village, Corentyne, has been remanded to prison after appearing before the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge in connection with the death of her young daughter.

Sarah Elizabeth Shivpersaud, a pathway worker, appeared in court on Monday, where she was formally charged with the murder of her 7-year-old daughter, Isabella Dabadial.

The incident is alleged to have occurred on April 5, 2026.
Shivpersaud appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias, who read the charge to her. She was not required to enter a plea at this stage.

During the proceedings, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Collin Clarke informed the court that the investigation file is complete. He also disclosed that a psychiatric evaluation conducted by Dr Rajkumar found that Shivpersaud is “fit to stand trial at this stage”.
The prosecution requested that the matter be transferred to the Albion Magistrate’s Court.

Shivpersaud was subsequently remanded to prison until May 12, when the matter will continue.
According to reports, Shivpersaud was recently taken back to the scene of the incident at Fyrish Village after being discharged from the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where she had been receiving medical treatment.

During that visit, she reportedly provided investigators with additional details about the events surrounding the child’s death.
Police allege that the fatal incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on April 5.

A post-mortem examination conducted by Government Pathologist Dr Vivakanand Brijmohan confirmed that the child died as a result of manual strangulation.

Authorities further claim that Shivpersaud attempted to harm her younger son, Ethan, who is one year and nine months old. The child survived.

Investigators revealed that Shivpersaud had reportedly been experiencing emotional distress in the days leading up to the incident. It is alleged that her husband had recently left the home and refused to return, contributing to her state of mind. Reports also indicate that she had not eaten on the morning of the incident and became overwhelmed.

Following the alleged attack, Shivpersaud reportedly inflicted injuries on herself, including cuts to the veins behind her ankles. She was subsequently hospitalised under medical supervision before being released into police custody.
Meanwhile, the young victim, Isabella Dabadial, was laid to rest on Friday.
