Police are investigating a shooting incident in which a 27-year-old woman was injured after her former partner allegedly opened fire on her in Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the incident occurred at about 16:50 hrs and involved Vasanti Gordon, a self-employed make-up artist of Islington, and Damion Morgan, 28, an unemployed man from Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, East Canje.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the two were previously in a relationship but had recently separated.

Police said Gordon reported that she was seated in her motor car when Morgan approached armed with a handgun and discharged several rounds in her direction before allegedly striking her on the head with the weapon.

She was taken to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital, where she was admitted. Doctors said she sustained suspected gunshot injuries to her right leg and thigh. Her condition is listed as stable.

Investigators recovered a spent shell from the vehicle, which has been taken as evidence.

Police said the suspect remains at large and is being sought.

Investigations are continuing.
