Residents across Region Six turned out in large numbers on Saturday to support a national clean-up campaign, reflecting strong community participation and civic pride.
The campaign, led by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, brought together citizens, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), joint services, private sector representatives, and residents. Officials leading efforts on the ground included Regional Chairman Junior Basant, Vice Chairman Wajid Saheed Khan, Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud, Deputy REO Mary Samaroo, and Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus.
Activities began around 5:30 a.m., with teams clearing drains, cutting grass, removing debris, and cleaning roadways across towns and villages. Participation in Region Six was particularly strong, extending into backlands and public spaces.
Basant said all municipalities and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, along with schools and health centres, were involved, adding that the campaign aims to promote sustained environmental responsibility beyond a single day.
Persaud said the initiative also seeks to raise awareness about proper waste disposal and encourage long-term behavioural change among residents.
Bacchus said police ranks were deployed in groups across multiple NDCs, including a large-scale operation in New Amsterdam, and urged citizens to avoid littering due to its impact on drainage systems.
The campaign forms part of a wider national effort, with President Ali also participating in similar activities in Georgetown.
