Guyana and St. Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday signed three memoranda of understanding covering agriculture and food security, security cooperation, and government modernisation, deepening bilateral ties between the two Caribbean nations.
The agreements were signed at the Office of the President by President Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Terrance Drew, while a separate security cooperation accord was inked by acting Major Kayode Sutton of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and Guyana’s Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan.
The deals aim to strengthen collaboration in key areas including food production, public sector efficiency and regional security, officials said.
During the engagement, President Ali also welcomed St. Kitts and Nevis into the Global Biodiversity Alliance, calling for greater international cooperation to protect natural resources.
“We welcome you as a member of the Global Biodiversity Alliance… in safeguarding biodiversity, which is directly linked to the survival of our agriculture, our heritage and ultimately our planet,” Ali said.
Prime Minister Drew said the partnership would support sustainable development, noting that biodiversity plays a critical role in advancing research and securing long-term economic resilience.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, Public Service Minister Zulfikar Ally, and Brigadier Omar Khan. (DPI)
