‘Game-changer’ one-stop service centre opens in Region Two

The commissioning of the Government of Guyana Service Centre in Region Two, hailed as a transformative moment for public service delivery, has been described as a “game changer” for the region.

Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, Zulfikar Ally, said on Wednesday that the centre marks a major shift in governance, bringing essential services closer to residents and reducing the need for long-distance travel to Georgetown. Residents can now access multiple government services in one location, saving time and money while improving efficiency.

“This is about changing lives and making government services more accessible to every citizen,” he said, adding that the government remains committed to decentralisation and ensuring no one is left behind.

Ally also highlighted the administration’s push toward digital transformation, pointing to the rollout of the Electronic Identification (E-ID) system. The centre will facilitate E-ID registration, enabling residents to access a wide range of services digitally.

He encouraged citizens to take advantage of training programmes, particularly the GOAL scholarship initiative, noting that thousands of Guyanese have already benefitted.

Help desks have also been established within Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) to support residents, while digital platforms such as the Citizen Connect app are being promoted to report issues and access services free of cost.

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, said the government continues to invest in infrastructure across Region Two, including roads and drainage, to complement the new facility and improve access for residents.

Director General of the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Sonia Latchman, said the region is advancing rapidly and that the service centre will further support its development.

“The future is bright for Region Two,” Latchman said, adding that improved access to services will empower communities and contribute to growth.

The facility brings together a range of services under one roof, including Digital Identity Card Registration, the Guyana Register Office, Small Business Bureau, Guyana National Bureau of Standards, Environmental Protection Agency, the Central Immigration and Passport Office, and the Guyana Legal Aid Clinic.

With these services centralised, residents no longer need to travel to Georgetown to conduct official business, reducing travel time and costs while improving efficiency. The commissioning signals a push to modernise public service delivery and expand access across the region.
