Caribbean has lost a ‘fine statesman’, says president

The death of former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi marks the loss of a “fine statesman” for the Caribbean, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali said on Monday.

“The region has lost a fine statesman… Guyana has lost a friend, and I have lost a friend,” Ali said in a statement, extending condolences to the government and people of Suriname and Santokhi’s family.

Ali described Santokhi as a close ally and partner in regional integration, noting their collaboration within CARICOM and on international issues. He said the two leaders shared a vision of closer ties between their neighbouring countries.

Under Santokhi’s leadership, relations between Guyana and Suriname strengthened, Ali said, highlighting growing cooperation and shared economic interests.

He also praised Santokhi’s “quiet strength” and dedication to public service, saying his leadership helped advance both national and regional development.

“May his memory be a blessing that sustains you in the days ahead,” Ali said.
