Calls amplified for more women to join Guyana’s aviation sector

Calls have amplified for more women to join Guyana’s aviation sector, as the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) launched its first Women in Aviation Conference on Monday.

GCAA Director General Lieutenant Colonel (Ret’d) Egbert Field said women are already making significant contributions across the sector, including as pilots, air traffic controllers, and engineers. He urged young people to consider aviation as a career, citing a potential future shortage of aviation professionals.

“There are many trailblazers, many women who have broken the ceiling in aviation,” Field said. He also highlighted aviation’s role in supporting other industries such as agriculture, oil and gas, and tourism.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, delivered the feature address, calling for greater female participation in leadership roles and reaffirming the government’s commitment to an inclusive, modern aviation sector.

He highlighted ongoing projects, including Terminal Two at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, the Civil Aviation School of Excellence, and two new municipal airports.

The two-day conference, running through March 31, features panel discussions and exhibitions by institutions including JAGS Aviation, the Civil Aviation Training School (CATS), and the Harry Wendt Aeronautical Engineering School.
Field emphasised that safety remains the sector’s top priority and encouraged women to pursue leadership positions.
