ExxonMobil Guyana has credited investments in training and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education with strengthening the capacity of the local workforce.

The company’s President, Alistair Routledge, recently highlighted investments in programmes aligned with City & Guilds certification and a US$100 million STEM initiative supported by Khan Academy, noting that these are expected to further enhance the country’s human capital.

He pointed to ongoing efforts to increase the share of Guyanese workers in both offshore and onshore operations, including the development of training infrastructure at the Guyana Technical Training Centre Incorporated in Port Mourant, Berbice.

“In another area of capacity building, I mentioned increasing the percentage of the workforce that is Guyanese. That’s through offshore and onshore. On the 14th of February…we went and celebrated the completion of the workshops and laboratories and classrooms for the Guyana Technical Training Centre in Port Mourant, Berbice. I was blown away by the quality of the facilities,” he shared.

Routledge said human capital development remains a priority, supported by GTTCI initiatives that provide internationally recognised certification through the City & Guilds programme.

“They are truly international standards. These are cutting-edge workshops, equipment for training technicians to work on the latest facilities that we install offshore. Or indeed to work in other industries in the country, be it the onshore gas plant or any other industries that grow in the future,” Routledge explained.

He added that the GTTCI facility will support Guyanese development to the highest international standards.

“It was wonderful to see not only the current cohort that has just started and will complete their entire 18 months training here in Guyana, but also the former graduates who are already working offshore,” he said.
