Six-month healthy lifestyle programme aims to equip 6,000 students with lifelong habits

A programme targeting 6,000 students in six months to promote healthy lifestyles among adolescents was launched on Wednesday following an agreement between UNICEF and Assuria.

The initiative, signed at Assuria’s head office, will be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and rolled out in schools across Region Four.

The six-month programme will use creative and interactive learning sessions to educate students on the importance of healthy lifestyle habits, with a focus on reducing behaviours that can lead to chronic health conditions.

Addressing the launch, UNICEF Guyana and Suriname representative (a.i.), Javier Córdoba, said that good nutrition and physical activity are fundamental to the physical, mental, and social development of children and young people.

“As chronic diseases increasingly affect younger populations, early intervention is essential to fostering lifelong healthy habits.”
Managing Director of Assuria, Yogindra Arjune, underscored the company’s commitment to sustainable development.

“Through this partnership, we are investing in the well-being of future generations and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, while strengthening the resilience of our communities.”

Deputy Chief Education Officer, Fazia Baksh, welcomed the collaboration, noting: “When corporate partners align their resources with the expertise of international organisations such as UNICEF, it creates a powerful platform for advancing social progress.”

Organisers said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to equipping young people with the knowledge and practices necessary to lead healthy and productive lives.
