Fresh produce, lower prices as Region Two opens Farmers’ Market

Residents of Region Two are benefiting from a new Farmers’ Market initiative, which transformed the area in front of the Anna Regina Town Council into a hub for fresh, locally grown produce on Wednesday.

The event, organised by the Department of Agriculture’s NAREI in collaboration with the Anna Regina Town Council and the Region Two Regional Democratic Council, aims to connect farmers directly with consumers while promoting affordability, food security, and sustainable agricultural growth.

From early morning, shoppers purchased items such as ochro, tomatoes, bora, pumpkin, watermelon, eggs, seedlings, and leafy vegetables at prices below typical market rates.

Regional Chairman Devin Mohan said the initiative provides a dependable outlet for farmers and access to fresh, high-quality produce for residents, while strengthening the regional economy and food security.

Farmers welcomed the market. Sharon Joseph said it allows her to sell directly to consumers and earn fair value for her produce. Egg producer Dinesh Garbaran described the initiative as timely support for small farmers.

Agriculture Coordinator Tamesh Ramnauth said the market is part of broader measures to stabilise prices and encourage local production, with early signs showing lower costs for consumers and improved earnings for farmers.

Ramnauth added that, based on the initiative’s success, there are plans to expand the programme to further develop agriculture and improve access to affordable food across the region.
