Demerara Bank Limited has officially opened a new branch at Beterverwagting on the East Coast of Demerara, expanding banking services in the area while placing greater emphasis on financial literacy and support for small businesses.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Irfaan Ali said the banking sector must do more to equip entrepreneurs with the knowledge needed to manage finances and access credit in an evolving financial environment.
“I urge the directors and management to examine the possibility of putting a skills development and financial management classroom in the branch,” the President said.
“Small and medium-sized enterprises can benefit from training and coaching right here at this branch.”
Ali noted that expanding banking services closer to communities is critical to improving financial inclusion across the country.
“Residents of this part of the East Coast no longer have to travel to Georgetown for basic banking services,” he said.
Bank officials said the new facility replaces the institution’s previous East Coast location and is designed to provide modern and efficient services for customers in surrounding communities.
Chief Executive Officer of Demerara Bank Limited, Dowlat Parbhu, said the branch reflects the bank’s continued expansion and commitment to improving customer experience.
“This new facility has been thoughtfully designed to deliver modern, efficient and comprehensive banking services,” Parbhu said.
“It features a spacious banking hall and dedicated areas for commercial banking and credit services.”
The branch also includes safety deposit box services and specialised sections for credit services and new account openings.
It is equipped with three intelligent ATMs — one drive-through and two walk-up units — allowing customers to make withdrawals and instant, envelope-free deposits.
The investment forms part of the bank’s wider strategy to expand access to financial services while supporting economic activity and business growth along the rapidly developing East Coast corridor.
