Flood alert: CDC urges residents to prepare as severe rainfall expected over next six days

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) has warned that unstable weather conditions are expected to produce widespread rainfall and significant flooding across Guyana over the next six days.

The Hydrometeorological Service forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from March 23–28, with increased water accumulation likely in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Coastal communities are urged to monitor conditions closely as rainfall is expected to intensify.

The CDC has issued risk levels by region:
* High (Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6): Coastal flooding, drainage overflow, road inundation, agricultural losses, spring tide advisory in effect.

* Moderate-High (Regions 1, 7, 10): Riverine flooding, possible community isolation, access disruptions to mining and hinterland areas, landslides in elevated terrain.

* Moderate (Regions 8, 9): Localised flooding near depressions and riverbanks, transportation delays.
Residents are advised to avoid flood-prone areas, secure valuables, clear drains, and prepare emergency supplies.

The CDC is monitoring conditions through the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) and coordinating with regional councils and emergency response agencies. Flood reports can be submitted via NEMS at +592-226-1027 or WhatsApp +592-600-7500.
