The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) will host the 7th Caribbean Regional Conference of the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF) on March 26–27 in Georgetown.
The IUF, a global federation representing around 10 million workers in 119 countries, will bring together about 50 trade unionists from the Caribbean and beyond. The conference will review the regional committee’s work since the last meeting in 2022 in Antigua and Barbuda and set priorities for the coming years.
Clifton Grant, First Vice President of the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU) of Jamaica, will present the IUF Caribbean Regional Secretary’s report. Delegates are also expected to discuss regional collaboration and strategies to advance workers’ rights.
IUF General Secretary (a.g.) Kristjan Bragason, visiting Guyana for the first time since taking office, will attend, highlighting the Caribbean region’s importance within the global labour movement.
A new IUF Caribbean Regional Committee, comprising representatives from affiliated unions, will also be elected.
Preparatory meetings, including sessions of the IUF Young Workers Committee, Women’s Committee, and the Caribbean Regional Committee, have already been held. The Young Workers Committee met on March 23 at GAWU’s Conference Room in Georgetown to examine the state of the regional labour movement and outline future strategies.
GAWU welcomed all delegates and observers, describing the conference as a demonstration of regional solidarity and international workers’ fraternity.
