A family of ten from Good Hope was left homeless and a 74-year-old grandmother hospitalised after her grandson allegedly set fire to their home in the early hours of Saturday.
The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m., destroying two houses on the property. Nermea Haliman, the pensioner, was inside her home when the grandson reportedly asked her to open the door. When she refused, he allegedly set the house ablaze.
Her daughter-in-law, Merlynholmes Gomes, 41, said family members rushed to assist, helping Haliman to safety as the flames spread. Gomes noted that her husband, a security guard, was on duty at the time and expressed relief that no children were harmed, though the family lost all their belongings.
The suspect remains at large. Mohamed Haliman, a relative, said he tried to save his mother and is praying for her recovery.
The Guyana Fire Service responded but was unable to save the property. Members of the Good Hope/Pomona NDC have since provided groceries to the displaced family. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
