Lethem is preparing to host what organisers say will be the largest staging yet of the Rupununi Ranchers Rodeo, scheduled for April 3–5 in Region Nine.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Susan Rodrigues is on a two-day visit to the border town ahead of the event, meeting with the Rodeo Committee to review preparations and planned improvements to facilities.

Organisers say upgrades include additional seating through new bleachers, an expanded vending area, a new media booth, a dedicated VIP section and improved viewing spaces to accommodate an expected increase in spectators.

Plans are also in place to improve visitor amenities and highlight the region’s cultural heritage, including upgraded washroom facilities, a waste-reduction initiative and a history and art booth showcasing rodeo traditions and Amerindian craft.

This year’s programme will also feature a farmers’ market with participation from 16 villages across the Rupununi, offering locally produced foods, crafts and agricultural products.

Ahead of the event, the Ministry of Public Works is upgrading sections of the road network in and around Lethem, while the Lethem Power Company is installing additional transformers and lighting to improve power supply and visibility at the venue.

The annual rodeo, widely regarded as one of Guyana’s most iconic cultural events, attracts thousands of visitors each year and supports tourism and economic activity in the Rupununi region.
