A 55-year-old man died after a three-vehicle crash on the Greenwich Park Public Road on the East Bank of the Essequibo River late Saturday night, police said.
Dead is Deryck Singh of St. Lawrence, East Bank Essequibo, who was driving motor car PXX 9053 when the accident occurred around 21:10 hrs.
Police said the crash involved Singh’s car and two motor lorries – GAB 5416 driven by a 31-year-old man of Leonora, West Coast Demerara, and GAF 6756 driven by a 21-year-old man of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.
Initial investigations indicate that the two lorries were proceeding east along the northern side of the Greenwich Park Public Road when Singh’s vehicle, which was travelling west in the centre of the roadway between the northern and southern lanes, reportedly swerved north into the path of lorry GAB 5416.
The car collided with the right-side rear wheel of the lorry, causing the vehicle to lose control and end up on the southern lane facing west.
Police said lorry GAF 6756, which was also travelling east along the northern side of the roadway, swerved onto the southern lane in an attempt to avoid the collision but crashed head-on into Singh’s car.
Singh was pinned inside the vehicle with multiple injuries. Public-spirited citizens removed him in an unconscious state and transported him to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
His body has been taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyzer test conducted on the driver of lorry GAB 5416 recorded readings of 071 and 072 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. The driver of lorry GAF 6756 recorded 05 micrograms.
Both drivers are in police custody assisting with investigations, while the vehicles involved have been lodged pending examination. Investigations are ongoing.
