The Linden Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Development (LCICD) has welcomed the construction of the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge, saying it will significantly improve connectivity, trade and commerce in the region.
Speaking to Ignite News on Thursday, LCICD Secretary Staydon Payne said the current single-lane bridge has long caused delays for commuters between Wismar and Mackenzie, sometimes taking more than an hour during peak periods.
He said the new bridge, now close to completion, will allow traffic to move in both directions simultaneously, reducing travel time and making it easier for residents and businesses to access services and markets.
“More importantly, the Linden-Mabura road link, which also connects to the Wismar-Mackenzie bridge, and the Linden-Soesdyke highway, currently under maintenance, will improve transit times and overall connectivity for business throughout the region,” Payne said.
LCICD President Lyndon Younge added that the bridge and related road projects will enhance transportation and economic activity in Linden and surrounding areas.
“The road to Lethem and the bridge connection will allow faster traffic flow and reduce the long-standing bottleneck caused by the single-lane bridge,” Younge said.
Physical works on the 233-metre concrete bridge are reported to be 97 per cent complete, according to the Ministry of Public Works. Local business leaders have also expressed strong support for the new infrastructure.
