Public servants first to receive $100,000 cash grant next week

Distribution of the $100,000 national cash grant to citizens aged 18 and older, starting with central government employees who already receive their salaries through bank accounts, will begin next week. This is according to Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh during an interview with NCN on Thursday.

The first group, comprising about 50,000 public servants, teachers and members of the disciplined services, is expected to receive the payment by the end of next week through direct bank deposits, Singh said.
The government plans to roll out payments to other eligible citizens in phases.

Authorities will also launch an online platform to allow citizens to register for the grant and receive guidance on opening bank accounts. The move is part of a broader push to expand financial inclusion and digitise government services.

President Irfaan Ali has urged citizens to open bank accounts, saying digital transfers would make payments faster, more efficient and transparent.

The Ministry of Finance said it has been working with commercial banks to simplify account opening, including online applications offered by Demerara Bank, Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry, Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited and Scotiabank Guyana.

The grant forms part of the government’s direct income support programme aimed at sharing the country’s economic gains and easing cost-of-living pressures.

More than $60 billion was distributed to over 600,000 Guyanese in late 2024 under the first $100,000 grant for adults.
The latest payout marks the third major cash transfer initiative by the government since 2020, when a $25,000 grant per household was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
