Two garbage trucks will be provided to the Charity area to strengthen waste management and improve sanitation at the Charity Amazon Market, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand announced on Tuesday.
The announcement came during a visit by Manickchand to the market, where she met with vendors and regional officials to discuss challenges affecting the market and surrounding communities. She was accompanied by Regional Chairman Devin Mohan, Prime Minister’s Representative Arnold Adams, Regional Executive Officer Susan Saywack, Ministry Engineer Raul Boyer, and Head of Markets Indrawattie Hirai.
Vendors and local officials raised concerns including poor drainage, limited vending space, slow business activity, and inadequate waste disposal. Chairperson of the Charity/Ursara Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Chandrawattie Coomal, highlighted difficulties in managing the large amounts of waste generated at the busy market due to the lack of garbage trucks.
Manickchand said the NDC must ensure the vehicles are properly managed, serviced, and maintained for long-term use, and added that the ministry’s central office will monitor their operation to guarantee efficiency.
Coomal welcomed the initiative, noting that the trucks will help improve waste disposal and overall cleanliness in the market and surrounding villages. Vendors also urged infrastructure upgrades and improved drainage to make the market more attractive and functional, citing slow sales and challenging conditions.
The visit is part of the ministry’s ongoing engagement with communities to address operational and infrastructure challenges in local markets.
