Mahaicony Technical Institute (MTI) capitalised on an out-of-sync Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre to win the inaugural MODEC Tertiary School Football Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Queen’s College ground.
MTI attacked throughout the match and secured a 6–3 victory against Upper Corentyne, who were on the back foot from the first whistle.
Winton Hartman, who was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), scored a double in the 71st and 82nd minutes. His goals were two of the final four in the match and helped seal the championship for MTI.
Meanwhile, Essequibo Technical Institute defeated New Amsterdam Technical Institute 6–3 to claim third place.
Jim Carter scored twice for Essequibo, who emerged as one of the surprise teams of the tournament.
MTI’s victory brings the curtain down on the first tournament of its kind in Guyana, organised by the Petra Organisation.
