A two-year-old child reportedly drowned on Saturday at Kabakaburi Mission, Upper Pomeroon River, while her mother was washing clothes nearby.
The child, identified as Samirah Evans, had reportedly been breastfed by her 23-year-old mother shortly after waking up around 12:30 hrs. According to police reports, the mother then left the toddler in the kitchen of their home while she returned outside to continue doing laundry.
The woman had been washing clothes next to the house, which is located approximately 300 feet from the Pomeroon River. While hanging out the clothes sometime later, she reportedly called out for the child but received no response.
Concerned, she went back inside the house and realised the toddler was missing.
The mother immediately began searching the surroundings and soon discovered the underwear the child had been wearing at the riverside landing nearby. Alarmed, she alerted relatives and other villagers, who quickly joined in the search effort around the home and along the riverbank.
Despite the community’s efforts, the child remained missing for several hours.
At approximately 17:30 hrs, the body of the toddler was discovered floating in the river in the vicinity of Warapana, Upper Pomeroon River, by 48-year-old Elton Thomas.
The body was subsequently removed from the water and transported to Charity Wharf on the Essequibo Coast, where it was handed over to police.
Authorities reported that an examination of the remains indicated that parts of the body had been eaten by piranhas.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
