President Dr. Irfaan Ali is among a select group of Latin American and Caribbean leaders who signed the Doral Charter at the inaugural Shield of the Americas Summit on Saturday, asserting their shared commitment to combat narco activities and transnational crime within the region.
Speaking on the sidelines of the summit hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump in Doral, Miami, President Ali affirmed Guyana’s full support for decisive action against drug cartels and their illicit transnational activities.
“We support the charter to deal with transnational crime, including narco-terrorism and these cartels,” the President stated.
He highlighted that the illicit drug trade has hampered development in the region, with several territories converted into transit points for narcotics traffickers.
“It is an issue that has exposed our borders to transnational criminals and criminal networks and has given the region a bad name, so we support strong action against drug cartels,” President Ali asserted, while also backing recent U.S. military action that destroyed several drug boats in regional waters.
President Trump has described the Shield of the Americas as a “Counter Cartel Coalition” advancing freedom, security, and prosperity in the Western Hemisphere.
Apart from a shared commitment to dismantle drug cartels and transnational criminal organisations, the pact will also work to discourage illegal immigration and ensure peace and stability throughout the hemisphere.
