The Ministry of Health on Tuesday commissioned a new Wellness Centre at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, marking a major step toward strengthening preventive healthcare among its staff and public health professionals.
The facility, located within the compound of the Eccles Health Centre, was officially commissioned by Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, who emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to shifting the national healthcare focus from treating illness to preventing disease and promoting healthier lifestyles.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Anthony underscored that traditional healthcare systems often focus on managing illnesses after they occur. He noted that the establishment of the Wellness Centre signals a proactive approach aimed at helping individuals maintain good health and reduce the risk of developing chronic conditions.
“This facility represents a shift from what we traditionally describe as ‘sick care’ to a stronger focus on preventive care. We want people to remain healthier for longer and avoid developing complications from chronic diseases,” the Minister stated.
He stressed the importance of regular medical check-ups, particularly among men, who often delay seeking medical attention until conditions become severe. Early detection of illnesses such as pre-diabetes and hypertension, he explained, significantly improves the chances of successful management and, in some cases, reversal.
The Wellness Centre will initially operate as a pilot programme for Ministry of Health staff. It will offer a comprehensive range of services, including annual health check-ups, screening for diabetes and hypertension, cardiovascular assessments such as electrocardiograms (ECGs), preventive screenings for cervical, breast and prostate cancers, orthopaedic rehabilitation services, and education and counselling on nutrition, healthy eating, stress management, adequate sleep and positive lifestyle changes.
The commissioning reflects the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare services and safeguard the health and well-being of healthcare workers, with the broader goal of fostering a healthier population across Guyana.
Also in attendance were Dr Cerdel Mc Watt, Director of Regional Health Services; Dr Ertenisa Hamilton, Director of Family and Primary Healthcare Services; Dr Ariane Mangar, Director of Rehabilitation Services; along with other senior health officials. (Ministry of Health)
