The Ministry of Health on Friday launched its largest-ever Medex Training Programme cohort, enrolling 100 students from all ten administrative regions to strengthen community healthcare delivery across Guyana.
The launch ceremony, held at the Health Sciences Education Division, marked a major step in building capacity at the community level. The cohort will undergo a comprehensive hybrid training programme, combining rigorous theoretical instruction with structured, hands-on clinical practice to prepare them for service.
Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony underscored the strategic importance of recruiting trainees from villages and hinterland communities. “We are deliberately trying to bring people from the various villages because once you train and you go back, you are more likely to remain there and serve,” he said. “This ensures that communities benefit directly from the skills and knowledge acquired,” the minister added.
Dr. Chandrountie Persaud, Director of the Health Sciences Education Division, addressed the cohort, emphasising that the programme is designed not only to build clinical competence but also professionalism, compassion, and leadership.
The initiative forms part of the ministry’s broader efforts to expand the healthcare workforce, reduce disparities in service delivery, and ensure quality medical care is accessible to citizens in every region. The programme reflects a long-term strategy to strengthen community-level healthcare and address regional gaps, particularly in remote and rural areas.
With this record cohort, the ministry aims to improve service delivery, foster locally based healthcare expertise, and ensure that trained medex professionals contribute meaningfully to public health across Guyana.
