Three armed and masked men stormed a yard in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, around 21:00 on Monday, assaulting a security guard inside his home before escaping with an undisclosed sum of cash and a motor vehicle.
Shannie Ramsingh, who operates a liquor store and grocery, said she had just closed her business and was speaking with a customer outside when the men entered her yard from the back.
“Three armed men appeared from this direction, just like that. I was speechless. They looked at me, I looked at them, and they passed by,” she said. “When the third one fired a shot into the air, we realised they were bandits. All three guns were aimed in one direction, so I sneaked into my shop and locked it, where I knew I was safe.”
Ramsingh said this was the third time she had experienced such a traumatic incident. She also expressed concern over what she described as ongoing suspicious activity in the area, including loud explosive sounds often mistaken for celebratory squibs.
Her nephew, Steven Ramsingh, a security guard at the property, said he initially mistook the gunshot for a squib.
“I was sitting in my house eating when I heard a pop, like a squib bursting. The next thing I saw was a man with a high-powered weapon pointing it at my head, asking, ‘Where is the money and gold?’” he recounted.
Steven said he repeatedly told the gunman he had no gold or significant sums of money, but he was struck across the head with the weapon.
“I was slapped across the head by the man with the high-powered weapon. I told him I didn’t have money—just a little cash I keep for running my house—so they took what they found,” he said.
The assailants reportedly took the cash and fled the scene in his cousin’s car. Steven said the ordeal unfolded so rapidly that he was left disoriented.
“It happened so quickly. I got confused and didn’t know where to go. When I realised what had happened, they had taken my cousin’s car and escaped,” he said.
He described the suspects as young, estimating their ages between 15 and 19 years old.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
