The family of 52-year-old Ravinand Yudeshwar Bishram, known as “Ravi,” is calling for a full investigation following his death at the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital, where he had been a long-term patient.

Sources indicate that Bishram died after an alleged altercation with another patient in the facility’s acute ward. However, relatives say they have received conflicting reports about how he sustained his fatal injuries.

Bishram’s caretaker, Diaram Singh, said he was at work on Friday when he received a call informing him that something had happened.

“They tell me that Ravi ended up in a thing, somebody hit him or he fell down or something. Then they said Ravi passed away,” Singh recounted. “I asked where Ravi was. They said at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital ICU or something. So I went there immediately.”

Singh said he spoke with a doctor at the psychiatric hospital, who reportedly informed him that there were conflicting accounts about what had transpired.

“The doctor told me that Ravi had an issue. Some people said he fell and hurt himself, and allegedly others said that somebody hit him,” Singh explained.

He was later directed to speak with another doctor for further clarification.

According to Singh, a medical official indicated that Bishram bore marks of violence and that a post-mortem examination would be necessary to determine the exact cause of death. The autopsy is expected to be conducted early next week.

“He said most likely the patient had marks of violence, so they need to do a post-mortem,” Singh said. “Some people who were around say his face was damaged or something. The doctor said allegedly that somebody beat him,” he added.

Bishram’s family is now calling for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Singh noted that this was not the first time the 52-year-old had sustained injuries while at the facility.

“Several times he got injured, bruises on his face and hands, but everybody just relaxed about that, until it came to this point,” he said. “They definitely want justice.”

Singh explained that Bishram had been in and out of the psychiatric hospital over the years, depending on his condition. However, he had remained there continuously for the past six to eight years, particularly after his mother fell ill.

“When he felt well, he would go out. But since his mum was sick… he never came out,” Singh said, adding that he last visited Bishram during the Christmas holidays.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the alleged assault.

An investigation is expected to have been launched as family members await the results of the post-mortem examination.
