The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) on Monday officially handed over the project site for the construction of a 3 megawatt (MW) grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) plant at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
The project, funded via a loan from the Export-Import (EXIM) Bank of India, is part of Guyana’s strategy to decentralise power generation, strengthen energy security, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions as the country transitions toward a low-carbon economy.
Once completed, the solar plant is expected to generate more than 112 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity over its lifespan. The energy will serve more than 1.2 million airport passengers annually, while lowering operating costs, improving efficiency for airport management, and reducing reliance on the national grid.
In 2025, a pre-qualification process conducted by the EXIM Bank of India shortlisted eight companies, but only three submitted bids. Oriana Power Limited was awarded the contract valued at US$2.49 million.
Following a joint inspection of the site, construction has officially commenced.
“The Guyana Energy Agency is thrilled to be part of another strategic sustainable energy investment that advances Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030,” said GEA CEO Dr. Mahender Sharma.
Krishnan Kutty Jaigopal of Oriana Power Limited said the company aims to deliver the project on schedule and within budget.
The GEA will provide oversight during the construction to ensure adherence to timelines and technical standards, furthering Guyana’s renewable energy objectives.
