Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand on Wednesday pledged improvements to the East Ruimveldt Market following consultations with vendors and shoppers on plans to rehabilitate the facility.
She said poor sanitation, inadequate drainage, structural deficiencies and safety concerns continue to hamper daily operations at the decades-old market, which she said has been neglected by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council.
“I see a lot of potential here for us to help these stall owners as well as customers enjoy a better market experience. This is a market of the City Council of Georgetown, but as you heard, nothing has been done to make their lives easier or to fix the issues they have been complaining about,” Manickchand said.
The minister said vendors proposed several solutions during the consultations and that the central government would intervene to ensure that the hundreds of people who use the facility can do so in a safer and more comfortable environment.
The consultations were aimed at identifying measures the ministry could take to transform the East Ruimveldt Market into a stronger economic hub serving the surrounding community
.
She said the government remains committed to preserving Guyana’s market culture, which plays a significant role in the social lives of many citizens.
The planned rehabilitation forms part of the government’s broader efforts to upgrade municipal and community infrastructure in Georgetown and other regions.
