The World Trade Centre Georgetown has assisted more than 1,000 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to become export ready since its official opening last June.
Working with partners including Action Coach, IPED and Demerara Bank, the Centre has provided training in market intelligence, export requirements, business planning and other key areas.
Centre Executive Director Wesley Kirton said the training programme has been a major milestone. “One of the major objectives is to position MSMEs to become better managed, more efficient, and, where they are not yet ready, to become exporters of their products,” he said.
Kirton noted that several entrepreneurs who participated in training have since accessed loans and opened formal business bank accounts, particularly micro-entrepreneurs who previously mixed personal and business finances. The guidance is intended to make businesses more profitable, sustainable and better able to support employees and families.
The Centre has also become a functional and affordable venue for corporate and diplomatic engagements, hosting events organised by embassies, organisations and the Centre itself. Kirton highlighted the Centre’s role in providing high-level trade intelligence and connecting Guyanese businesses to over 300 World Trade Centres worldwide, including non-traditional markets.
He added that while some export introductions may be small in volume, the Centre encourages businesses to explore niche opportunities. Future training will be intensified to ensure Guyanese enterprises meet international standards and commitments.
