The Guyana Technical Training College Inc. was officially opened on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the country’s drive to build a highly skilled workforce to support its rapidly expanding economy.
Located in Port Mourant, Region Six, the state-of-the-art facility will offer a wide range of programmes, including Production Technician Training, as well as specialised studies in Instrumentation, Electrical, and Mechanical disciplines.

Each programme branches into further areas of specialisation designed to meet the evolving demands of the oil and gas sector and other key industries.
Delivering the feature address, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali described the institution as a transformative national investment. “This is an investment in a workforce, an investment in the future of our country,” the President said.
He acknowledged the significant cost associated with constructing and operationalising the facility, noting that the government partnered with finance and construction entities to ensure its successful completion.

Originally designed to serve Guyanese students, the college is already attracting regional interest. President Ali announced that the institute will also be open to participants from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and other countries. “All those who are going into the deep sea and building out this sector will have to find themselves here, and we are open,” he declared.
The Head of State also revealed plans to modernise and upgrade the GuySuCo Training Institute, integrating it under a broader umbrella to align its capacity and capabilities with the standards of the new technical college. This move, he explained, will further strengthen the country’s human resource development framework.
The President also underscored the region’s longstanding identity as an agricultural hub. He noted that the Minister of Agriculture has been tasked with developing a state-of-the-art agricultural training facility in the region to support the industrialisation of agriculture and the growth of a modern food industry.
“This is an amazing time to be young in Guyana, and to be young here in Berbice,” President Ali said, pointing to the expanding opportunities in technical education and employment.
He stressed that while infrastructure development may be temporary in the time it takes to build, the results are lasting.
